What is the graph of the solution set of the compound inequality? -5 < a - 4 < 2

hero (hero):

You are given: -5 < a - 4 < 2 Now add 4 to each side: 4 - 5 < a < 2 + 4 And then simplify that

hero (hero):

You should get a result where 4 - 5 = b 2 + 4 = c and b < a < c In other words, a is the range of values \(\color\green{\text{between}}\) b and c

What would it look like on a number line?

hero (hero):

If you don't understand that, then perhaps you can learn by example: Suppose you had -3 < x - 7 < 8 Then you would add 7 to each side to get 7 - 3 < x < 8 + 7 And after simplification you get 4 < x < 15 So x is between 4 and 15 Then you could represent that on a graph: |dw:1383880485538:dw|
