**MEDAL FOR THE BEST ANSWER!!**

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Input in standard form the equation of the given line. The line that passes through (-1, -3) and (2, 1)

hartnn (hartnn):

find the slope first... i think now you know the steps ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(1- (-3)) / ( 2 - (-1)) = 4/3?

hartnn (hartnn):

m = 4/3 yes correct

hartnn (hartnn):

x1 = 2 y1 = 1 y-y1 = m (x-x1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did you get the 2 and 1 from?

hartnn (hartnn):

point ---->" (2, 1)"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh! Okay so y - 1 = 4/3 (x - 2)

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, bring it in the form ax+by =c a as positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So multiply each side by 3 and that brings us to 3y-3 = 4x - 6. Then we add 3 to both sides making it 3y = 4x - 3. Then we want to isolate c so we subtract 4x by both sides making it -4x + 3y = -3. Right? Then aren't we supposed to make the -4x positive?

hartnn (hartnn):

4 (x-2) = 4x-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh oops I multiplied the -2 by 3 as well. So then it's 3y = 4x - 5, right?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes now subtract 3y from both sides ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So -4x = -3y - 5?

hartnn (hartnn):

why did u bring 4x on left ? we need to keep a as positive so 0 = 4x-3y -5 got this ? now add 5 on both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so 5 = 4x - 3y.

hartnn (hartnn):

thats it!

hartnn (hartnn):

or 4x-3y = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome! Thank you so much! I understand it all so much better! You've really helped me a lot!

hartnn (hartnn):

always happy to help :) welcome ^_^
