2^x=3 HELP!!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Have you learned logarithms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm attempting to learn it now, but it is very confusing to me.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A logarithm is an exponent. When you ask what is the log base 10 of 100, you are asking what exponent do you need to raise 10 to, to get 100?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

\( \log_a x = y\) means \(a^y = x\). Remember, the log is an exponent.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

To solve an equation like this, with the variable in the exponent, you take the log of both sides.

stop being hams and give the answer up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so I would do log (x) = log(3) ?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

\( 2^x = 3\) \( \log 2^x = \log 3\) \( x \log 2 = \log 3\) \(x = \dfrac{ \log 3}{\log 2} \)
