In 1792, Eli Whitney's cotton gin changed cotton farming forever. How did the invention of the cotton gin and the slave rebellions that followed affect laws regarding slavery in the South? Southern states made importing slaves to the United States illegal. Southern states denied slaves the right to get an education or ever be freed. Southern states made it illegal to free slaves without permission from the state. Southern states increased the wages that slaves were paid to be equal with whites.
