How did social movements contribute to the growth of the United States?

social movements gave people the idea of defying authority; such as the First Great Awakening. Eventually, the colonists banded together and revolted against England to become the United States of America. Later, social movements brought the United States into the modern age making work, food and health care better for everyone (See Progressive Reforms). The Civil Rights Movement resulted in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965; both guaranteeing equality.
