what factors contributed to the movement for independence from britain

I had a huge essay written on this for AP United States History. It stemmed from the French and Indian War. Starting off, the Proclamation of 1763 forbade the colonists from expanding westward. This wasn't so bad, but debt was incurred from the war, so the British taxed the colonists, namely the Stamp Acts. The colonists boycotted, so parliament issued the Declaratory Acts, which said that they could issue laws that were just as enforced in the colonies as they are in Great Britain. Things continued to escalated, after the Boston Tea Party, parliament passed the Intolerable Acts, which was key to the negative feelings towards England because they took away all the rights that they had previously had, like self-governing. Okay there is a lot more than just that. So I suggest looking into the Proclamation of 1763, Stamp Act, Townshend Program, the Declaratory Acts, Coercive (or Intolerable) Acts. There is way too much information to write out on here. Essentially, it was an escalation. My short answer is that things began to escalated after The French and Indian War, with Britain issuing laws and the colonists getting back at them, or not abiding by them at all.

thanks but this is a multiple choice question, so I don't know where your answer would fit into these four option: Thomas Paines common sense discontent among the colonists over king georges restrictive trade policies a desire for the colonists to govern themselves all of the above

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well because B and C are true, I'd have to assume that D, all of the above is the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your sure about this...right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm pretty sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll google it.

thanks :)

From what I see, the Navigation Acts were acts that parliament passed to stop the colonists from trading with the dutch. Eventually they were strictly enforced. Colonists most definitely wished to govern themselves as they always had. So if two are true, the third must be true as well because there's no "B & C" choice.

But when I googled your question, someone had only chose "the desire for the colonists to govern themselves." I mean it's whatever but I strongly believe it is all of the above.
