You should never write in first person for an essay, unless its a narrative (like you're writing about just yourself). it would be much more effective to write in 3rd person so you can include testimonials, statistics and other sources. you can still use your thoughts and opinions, just don't use i or me, state them as facts, act as if what you're saying is true. it is much more persuasive that way.
