To travel 88 miles, it takes Sue, riding a moped, 3 hours less time than it takes Doreen to travel 56 miles riding a bicycle. Sue travels 14 miles per hour faster than Doreen. Find the times and rates of both girls.

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

Say Vs is Sue's speed and Vd is Doren's speed. You'd have \[\frac{ 88 }{ Vs }=\frac{ 56 }{ Vd }-3\] Because Sue takes 3h less traveling than Doren and \[Vs=14+Vd\] Because Sue's speed is 14miles higher that Dorien's If you solve that system you'll get both their rates and you can deduce time by doing: time=distance/rate
