A new cruise ship line has just launched 3 new ships: the Pacific, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. The Caribbean has 38 more rooms then the Pacific. The Mediterranean has 40 fewer rooms than twice the number of rooms on the Pacific. Find the number of rooms for each of the ships if the total number of rooms for the 3 ships is 486.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well let P be the rooms on the Pacific then the Carribean has P + 38 the Mediterranean has 2P - 40 so the sum of the 3 expressions is 486 so 486 = P + P + 38 + 2P - 40 simplify the equation and then solve for P, the number of rooms on the Pacific... then you should be able to find the others.
