Can someone show me the step by step on how to find the remainder of this monomial and polynomial please? Whats the remainder? (x^2-2x-5-1) / (x-3)

OpenStudy (ness9630):

Use synthetic division

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the thing im really bad at that. Can you just help me step by step, this isnt my problem i just made an example so i can work off it easier cause i dont have many examples

OpenStudy (ness9630):

Alrighty, can you at least get the setup though?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like i said I'm terrible at this. I think you do something like multiply of fx-3 from x^2-2x-5-1 and go from there somehow but that's all i know :/

OpenStudy (ness9630):

So if your equation is x^2-2x-5-1, we should start off by combining like terms. So it would be x^2-2x-6 This is how it would look like for synthetic: |dw:1384107031416:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i seen that before so makes sense

OpenStudy (ness9630):

Do you understand where everything came from? The 3, the 1, -3, -6?

OpenStudy (ness9630):

*-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah you made the 3 a positive and took the coefficients mhm

OpenStudy (ness9630):

Good, so what we do now is start dividing, our first step is to bring down the 1, multiply by the 3 and add it to the next: |dw:1384107394637:dw| And after that just keep on going till you either get a reminder or a perfect factor.
