Males and females have, as an overall rough number, 80% similarity in viewpoints, reactions, etc. The 20% difference can be very far apart at times.

Females tend to be interested in expressing and sharing more. To another female, this creates a communal response and is regularly used for catharsis. Males, in contrast, are more apt to see this as a request for action and go out to fix what they have been told about. Then the female feels the male is clueless because she was sharing and still devising a plan to deal with a problem and he is butting in.

Physiologically, females listen to most things they hear. They have efficient auditory processing. Males, in contrast, have a filter system that flat out does not exist in females. This system can literally discard what they hear without any listening occurring. Scientists feel this evolved through the different roles in hunter-gatherer societies. No matter the reason, it does mean that at times males simply are not listening.

The X chromosome is linked to several critical stages in brain development. Females, having two, are more efficient at these stages. This results in a brain size that is smaller but contains the same number of neurons, etc. The average IQ of both is within half a percent, therefore the same. The high and low IQ possibilities are also the same. However, the bell curve for female IQ is more leptokurtic, or weighted to the center. This means that overall there are less female geniuses... and more male idiots. This development cycle is also seen in when the brain finishes developing: 23 for females and 25 for males. Thus, females are fully grown before males.

Females tend to have a better grasp of their emotions, though there is considerable argument in the literature on if this is due to nature or nurture. This is probably the one thing I am listing here that is still widely contended.

So to be honest, it is not that males are clueless. It is that there are some fundamental gender differences that cause problems and that people should be getting interpersonal communications training form pretty early on to deal with this but they don't bother with that until you are in college.

its not so complicated as everyone says...their brains are built differently than girls' brains are, their though process is different than girls' by a long shot, oh, and same with growing and maturing, girls typically get taller around age 13-15, guys grow between age 16-18. Also, girls mature by the time they are ending high school and by their low 20's. Guys don't mature til they are in their mid to late 20's and 30's @e.mccormick

If I recall, it is mid 20s for females and late 20s to early 30s for males. Also, there is wide variation with how people are raised. The more people are treated as adults, the sooner they become them. Look at Sudbury Valley School as an example of this.
