For this question what you want to do is get y all by itself. so you have 3x=y-5 and to get y by itself you need to get rid of that -5 so to do that you just add 5 because opposites cancel! But whatever you do to one side do to the other! so add 5 to 3x as well, now you have 3x+5=y and you can rewrite as y=3x+5
