OpenStudy (adrynicoleb):

1. Which substitution mutation has the potential to cause more damage? a) substitution of 3rd N-base to go from AUU to AUC b) substitution of 3rd N-base to go from AAC to AAA 2. UV radiation and tobacco are common mutagens that cause cancer. Explain why some people who are exposed to these mutagens develop cancer and some do not.

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

a: Its a stop codon, or nonsense mutation b: people have different tolerates. Some people have really strong/adaptive immune systems, some dont.

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

1: A

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

generally if there is a mutation in the 3rd codon then it doesnt cause a great damage due to the wobble hypothesis...AUC and AUU both code for isoleucine. so that is no damage. AAA codes lysine while AAC codes for asparagine. so in this case it is B because it is a change in amino acid. but in general conditions we also need to check if this amino acid is placed in an important position which would hamper with the funtion of the protein for eg active site of the enzyme.

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

ahhhh,,,,,, shrutipande9 is right...... my bad!
