You are asked to write a single variable equation to solve a word problem with two unknown amounts. What do you do?

You can usually get 2 equations. Whichever equation is easiest to solve for x or y. Solve that one for x or y and plug the result in for the variable in the other equation. Then you will have an equation with only 1 unknown.

you'll need to create two equations and have a 'system of equations' then use direct stubstitution to turn the equation into one.
