You were thinking right though... you go 17 units left and 17 units right.

5+17, or 5-17

Start at 5 on the number line. Then move 17 units to the right to land on 22 (5+17 = 22) Go back to 5, and then move 17 units to the left to get to 5 - 17 = -12
