Find the moment of inertia of a hollow cone (mass M, base radius R) around its symmetry axis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u know how to calculate moment of inertia in general?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and do u know what is M.I of a ring ? about its centre through an axis perpendicular to it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes mr^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then u can cut that cone into small small rings.. ( a differential ring if u may). and then integrate it over the entire cone ;-) think about it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, i'll do, but what will final ans.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dunno :P.. i haven't done it.. just try and post ur work.. !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so,funny.ok, i'll do and ll post ans :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it will \[\frac{ 1 }{2}MR ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

seems legit.. so there u have it :D
