Online courses such as the one provided by MIT OCW ( http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/find-by-topic/#cat=engineering&subcat=computerscience) are generally a great way of getting started in the space. In terms of book recommendation -- if you're looking to do this as your main profession -- start with classic books data structures and algorithms (amazon a tonne of them).
