This is what I did.
I am here in the battle, fighting to overtake the great city of Constantinople. I smell the salt water from the Mediterranean splashing against the sides of this ship, which I am on. My comrades are all fighting before my eyes, some of them with swords, some with bows and arrows, or a crossbow like myself. They are yelling at the enemy and I hear the agonizing cries of those who are at death's door. I am alert with my crossbow in hand, shooting down those who try and harm my fellow soldiers. Fear of dying is nearly crippling me. I want to run and hide from this dreadful battle, but I stand my ground, because I know that dying is better than living the life of a coward. I am trying to think of the good that might come of this battle for me if I do indeed live to see the end of it. I hope to become wealthy from the plunder that I could gather from this fallen city. Perhaps I will be recognized with honor or even promoted for being brave and an excellent soldier in this battle. And I wishfully hope that if this battle is won, that I can return home to see my family, whom I have not seen for what seems like years. I know that these wishes are most likely in vain, and I fear more battles to come, or training for more, in this upcoming week, but I hold on to the hope that this is the end. I am praying that the overtaking of Constantinople for once and for all will leave our empire at peace for a time.
