What is the value of the expression |a + b| + |c| when a = –3, b = 7, and c = –15? A.5 B.–11 C.25 D.19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The two lines mean absolute value. To find this, do a+b, (in your case the answer is 4) and take the absolute value of that. Absolute value is defined as how far away a number is from zero on the number line. This means that even if your number is negative, its absolute value is a positive number. So the absolute value of (C) in your problem is 15 because -15 is 15 spaces away from zero on the number line. To find your answer, add 4 to 15. This is 19 (D).
