what is four times the sum of fourteen and c is a squared

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

What is the sum of 14 and c-squared? Write an expression that means that.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Take it one piece at a time: How do you write "the sum of fourteen and c"?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

It also helps to be clear. I was leaning toward \(14 + c^{2}\). mathstudent55 was leaning toward \((14+c)^{2.}\) Pretty tough to tell on this one.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The problem states "is a squared." That means \(= a^2\) Therefore, the sum of 14 and c is simply 14 + c 4 times the sum is 4(14 + c) Final answer: \(4(14 + c) = a^2\)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I think it is clear.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Perhaps you are right. I wasn't interpreting the "a" at all.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I think the key to it is the word "is" meaning "equals."
