negative plus a negative is a positive or a negative??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Positive.

OpenStudy (kainui):

What the hell? It's obviously negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You sure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha lol its a positive

OpenStudy (kainui):

(-3)+(-7) is -10. All negatives.

OpenStudy (trantom):

uhhhh kainui is right... xD think of it this way. If you add a negative to a negative you get MORE negative. Also, -x+-x=-2x because +- always will be a negative in the end unless it is +--

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but a negative plus a negative is a positive.

OpenStudy (trantom):

no it isn't, a negative TIMES a negative is a positive

OpenStudy (trantom):

kainui dont be mean, hes confusing it with multiplication

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i? blah.

OpenStudy (trantom):

yea I used to do that a lot xD Then I realized I would get an F on my next test so I really tried hard to remember and now it's stuck :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for helping xD

OpenStudy (kainui):

Sort of think of adding numbers on the number line. That might help to visualize. If you think of negative numbers kind of like being in debt, you might say: I owe Kathy 3 dollars and I owe John 5 dollars, so overall I owe 8 dollars, which is all negative money.
