What is the difference between Ser and Estar?

Ser is used for things or characteristics that are permanent. Estar is used for characteristics that change or aren't permanent. You would use estar when talking about things people do over the weekend.

Permanent characteristics or features, such as; gender, profession, nationality, race, personality, physical attributes, etc.
Time such as; date, days, seasons, time, events, etc.

Estar is used with:
States of being such as; feelings, civil state, etc.
