OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You do not need to solve this equation. You need to look at it and recognize immediately that there is no solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh? Could you please explain why there is no solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or how?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

What is the sign of an absolute value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, it is | |

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You did not answer the question. The symbol for absolute value we agree upon. The question is what is the sign? Is it positive or negative or zero or what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused. @tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

|3| = 3 |12| = 12 |-6| = 6 |-14| = 14 |0| = 0 What can you say about the sign of those values on the right hand side? See any negatives?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The absolute value cannot be negative, so, ah I see, there is no solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Absolute values are NonNegative (Positive or zero). Multiply such a thing be a negative number and it is NonPositive. (Negative or zero) Since 14 is neither negative nor zero, we're done!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you! I completely understand now I can go and apply what I've learned to other problems. @tkhunny
