I actually wrote an essay on this topic about a month ago. From the very beginning of the Syrian conflict, the U.S. has been smuggling weapons to the Syrian opposition, which in turn is fueling the war. If the U.S. had not taken sides in the conflict, it would have ended a long time ago, as the opposition forces in Syria were relatively small, unprepared and lacked the resources to fight against the Syrian regime. The U.S. involvement in Syria resembles its role in Afghanistan during the early 1980s, when it armed the Taliban insurgents against the Soviets. We know where that led us.
