Betsy wants to paint the walls of her bedroom. Her bedroom measures 8 ft. by 10 ft. and has 8 ft. ceilings. Not counting doors and windows, how many square feet of wall will Betsy need to paint?

This is a surface area question. The total surface area of the room will equal: 2lw + 2lh + 2hw , or 2 (lw + lh + hw) where l is the length, h is the height, and w is the width. Just let each variable be one of the dimensions: l = 10 h = 8 w = 8 plug it into the equation: 2 (10*8 + 10*8 +8*8) = 448 square ft The equation just comes from getting the area of the 6 sides of the room, which is defined by length times width of each. The ceiling will equal the floor, and walls opposite of each other will equal eachother as well, which is why you only need to find the area of 1 of each of these and then multiply them by 2 to account for the other sides.
