in what ratio does the x-axis divide the line segment joining (-5,4) and (4,-8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 1:2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first u gotta find out those points which are dividing (-5,4) and (4,-8) in a ratio then plug them in the ratio formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the only point given that is dividing (-5,4) and (4,-8) is the point in the x-axis which is unknown. how am i suppose to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1384346190801:dw| you know that at x-axes y=0 right ? so first find the slope of given points then plug them in the formula y-y1=m(x-x1)
