The Radical Republicans passed a series of laws designed to protect the rights of African Americans in the United States. The Radical Republicans consisted of politicians from the Republican Party around the year of 1854 until the year 1877. The party referred to each other as radicals during the Civil War. After the war, many referred to them as conservatives or liberals depending on the source. The Radical Republicans tried to pass many laws through Congress but most were vetoed by Lincoln. They were also known for fighting with President Jackson over many issues while he was in office.
