So I started off by separating into two equations. x + y = 500 .6x + .3y = 500(.48) I chose to go about doing it with substitution. y = 500 - x plugging it in I get .6x + .3(500 - x) = 240 .9x + 150 = 240 x = 100 I then plug it back into the problem .6(100) + .3y = 240 y = 600 What am I doing wrong with this method and why are the answers wrong?

well pooh

.6*x+(500-x)*.3=.48(500) x = 300 500=300+y y=200 x(.6) + y(.3) = ? 300(.6) + 200(.3) = 240 = .48(500) [True}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you did this step: .6x + .3(500 - x) = 240 .9x + 150 = 240 x = 100 it should have been: .6x + .3(500 - x) = 240 .6x - .3x + 150 = 240
