Luther specifically wanted that people can read the bible by themselves and actually understand what it says. This way people get information about the religion from sources other than clergy too.

Even though scriptures became available in one's own language one thing remand true, there was also someone or group that claimed to interpreted it, this is why you have so many denominations.  The Roman Catholic position was that only they could interpret scripture and the commoner couldn't thereby creating a standard interpretation of the cannon they created.
