determine the domain and range of the function f(x)=3/x-2+1. do not know how to explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it (3/x)-2+1 or 3/(x-2+1)

OpenStudy (phi):

is this \[ f(x)= \frac{3}{x-2} + 1 \] ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes Phi

OpenStudy (phi):

For the domain ("legal" x values) start by assuming the domain is all real numbers from -infinity to plus infinity then toss out any x values that cause a divide by 0 what number would cause you to divide by 0 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

OpenStudy (phi):

are you saying when x is 1 that the bottom of 3/(x-2) is 0 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

you do not want 3/0 (your calculator will complain if you try that) that means if you have 3/(x-2) you do not want x-2 = 0 but one x number will make x-2 be 0. that is the number that you do not allow
