to solve for "v" you want to get it all alone so for 2(v - 3) - 8v = 12 first distribute 2v - 2*3 - 8v = 12 then simplify 2v - 8v - 6 = 12 then add/subtract like terms -6v - 6 = 12 then add 6 to both sides -6v = 18 then divide both sides by -6 v = -18/6 (simplify more)
