Solve |2x - 1| > 5 (Use set notation in your answer) please show me how you did it

OpenStudy (ranga):

Whenever you come across an inequality involving absolutes split the inequality into two parts while removing the absolute operator: |a| > b means: a > b OR -a > b (we have gotten rid of the absolute operator) Solve the two inequalities separately and combine the solution in the final answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok this is what i got how can i combine them? 2x-1<-5 = x<-2 2x-1>5 = x>3

OpenStudy (ranga):

The solution in interval form is: (-infinity, -2) U (3, infinity) where U is the Union symbol.

If you have not been taught interval notation or graphing the solution yet you can simply say that the solution is: x < -2 OR x > 3.
