Evaluate the expression, using the given value of the variable. z ÷ 3 – 5z + 4(z – 2) when z = 12 A. –16 B. –96 C. –14 D. –98

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

for z ÷ 3 – 5z + 4(z – 2) when z = 12 you would plug in 12 for z into z ÷ 3 – 5z + 4(z – 2) so you get (12) / 3 - 5(12) + 4(12 - 2) and remember PEMDAS!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would the answer be D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh no i meant B

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

hmm... that's not what I got? (12) / 3 - 5(12) + 4(12 - 2) Parenthesizes first (12) / 3 - 5(12) + 4( 10 ) then Multiply and Divide 4 - 60 + 40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and 4 -100= -96

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

ah, right... PEMDAS for Multiplication/Division and Addition/Subtraction you do it from left to right so 4 - 60 + 40 -56 + 40 -16
