What would happen in American Democracy if citizens stopped participating in political and social life?

OpenStudy (kenljw):

Social life consist of family, friends, entertainment and news media. These shape our views of the world. The amount of ones education actually determines friends and subjects of interest which they propagate among themselves. My experience is the greater the education the narrower is one sphere of influence unless your in press and politics or a author. All the data we accumulate in our life, real or illusion, is what makes us a citizen and whether were politically active is of little consequence. If the government brings about such conditions that are unbearable to a citizen that's when revolt occurs. I was once told by a coworker, who majored in political science, that when the economy drops off 10% from its peak civil unrest occurs. It has actually dropped more than this in the last 30 years that's why the government has been preparing for mass uprising in the name of civil order.
