Can someone please help me solve this homework problem. I would greatly appreciate the help and any comments as to how to solve this. Thank you. Question: A contestant participating on a guest show must guess the price of a new car. The contestant will win if his guess is within $1000 of the price of the car. If the price of the car is $24995 and the contestant's guess is represented by g, what absolute value inequality represents this solution?
g is the guess. g can be more than $24995 or less than $24995. But as long as the difference is less than $1000 the contestant will win. So when we take the difference we have to take the absolute value because the guess can be lower or higher than the prize of the car. Therefore, | g - 24995 | < 1000
Thank you, I originally had | x-1000 | < 24995 is this also right?
No that will not be correct. Also, they want you to use the variable g for guess. So | g - 24995 | < 1000 is the correct inequality.
