first you have to get common denominators which is going to be 12. you multiply the 1/4 times 3 and you will get 3/12 + 5/12 = 8/12. then you simplify and get 2/3

Well as you can see, 12 is divisible by four. All you have to do is multiple both sides of 1/4 by three, making the four a 12, allowing you to add 3/12 and 5/12 to get 8/12. Now you can simplify to get 2/3.
