What were the causes of the Spanish American War?
Spanish rule in Cuba had been brutal for many years prior to the war (1898). The US, becoming increasingly irritated with conditions in Cuba and whipped up by the 'yellow' press, started pressuring Spain to give up Cuba or face serious consequences. President McKinley, who was very reluctant to go to war with Spain, did send the USS Maine to Havana harbor on a peaceful mission that wasn't designed to be a show of force. Well, the Maine blew up in Havana harbor with a great loss of life, the press DEMANDED action from the government for this supposed Spanish 'sabotage', and war against Spain was quickly declared.. At the Treaty of Paris, Spain lost Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippine Islands and other possessions in the the Pacific. The US paid an indemnity to Spain. HOPE THIS HELPED!! :)
