Why do O2 and CO2 pass through the plasma membrane?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

because they're small, non-polar molecules

OpenStudy (rina.r):

O2 and CO2 pass back and forth through the membrane/phospholipid bilayer due to simple diffusion. Diffusion can only occur because of the polarity and solubility of elements or molecules
