Traditionally, functions are referred to by the letter name f, but f need not be the only letter used in function names.

f(x) = 2x+3 + 5x
Evaluate f(3)
all you do is substitute 3 into x.
this becomes
f(3) = 2(3) + 3 + 5(3)
f(3) = 24
