someone please help me be sure I have what I need to do on this question straight. Solve. –40 = 5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so all I have to do is find the what x is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and I do that by multiplying 5 by? to try and get -40

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

whatever you do to one side of the equation you also must do to the other :) the goal is to get x all by itself on one side

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

to do this you divide both sides by 5

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

so -40/5=-8 5x/5=x this leaves us with -8=x we just had to get x all by itself on one side :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be -8 correct?

OpenStudy (emilylauren):

correct!
