Could someone please help me set up this proportion word problem? Bear population. To estimate the size of the bear population on the Keweenaw Peninsula, conservationists captured, tagged, and released 50 bears. One year later, a random sample of 100 bears included only 2 tagged bears. What is the conservationist’s estimate of the size of the bear population? Is it 50 over 100 equals 2 over x?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

I was thinking 50 over x equals 2 over 100 because 2 of the 100 bears were tagged after 50 out of the whole population were released.

OpenStudy (queenv):

0k so after doing the extreme-means my answer would be x =2500 is the conservationist's estimate of the size of the bear population?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

2500 is correct :)
