OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the refractory period and what is its importance in nerve impulse conduction??

OpenStudy (rina.r):

the refractory period is the period directly after the action potential has been passed where the section of neurone which has passed the impulse can't send any further impulses. this is so important because it stops the impulse from being propagated down the neurone the wrong way (i.e. back the way it came) which in turn ensures that nerve pathways work properly
