Surprisingly, Charles Darwin isn't the origin of social Darwinism. Rather, Herbert Spencer was a prominent advocate of the theory. Andrew Carnegie actively rejected the anti-philanthropy ideas of social Darwinism and actively contributed to charities. I don't think Benjamin Silliman was related to the theory at all.
