What are similarities do you see between our own culture today and the roman empire?

As with the Romans, we are in a transitional phase as the Republic dies out and the Empire grows. The rise of big money as a political force, the use of religion to sway voters and distract them from real issues, the lack of respect for law and constitutional procedures, the increased emphasis on conquest and control, the growth of professional military forces and use of mercenaries, the emphasis on the forms of democracy without the substance are all similar.
