I think that it suggests the passage of time. You are born, and time starts for you. It rises to a peak, then you begin your descent into old age, the tide reaching its lowest point when you die. It could also represent the passage of time in the simple fact that it never ends.

Also: People assume that time is a strict progression of CAUSE to EFFECT, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, It's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey...Stuff.
