The poverty of the apothecary. The man did not want to sell him the poison at first considering it is against the law and punishable by death. But Romeo tells the man that he should not be afraid of death, his life is miserable after all. Romeo tells the man to just take the money and give him the poison. The Apothecary agrees, but not because he wants to but because he is poor and needs the money far to much to refuse.
