Performance enhancing drugs can be used to increase muscle mass as well as to treat various medical conditions. For example, men suffering from delayed puberty can sometimes be treated via controlled doses of anabolic steroids.

However, these drugs have numerous side effects, including hormonal imbalance and damage to vital organs. They can stunt growth and weaken the heart, leading to early-onset heart attacks and palpitations. The liver can suffer damage from high concentrations of medicine, leading to all sorts of nasty effects.

All drugs can be addicting. Steroids will often cause negative mental effects such as aggression.

And, as with most potent substances, performance enhancing drugs can cause death through overdose or chronic use.
