algebra help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you need help with is there a specific question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i might be able to get help for you but i cant help you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay that's fine I'm also waiting to see if @jigglypuff314 is available. He usually helps me when he can.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what values of m and n would make the denominator 0? If the denominator is 0, it would be undefined so that would be the restriction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you're saying it would be B?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

hi, sorry it took me a while to get to this, the message system was glitching again. so, first, I'm a girl :P second, you can't divide by zero, therefore the denominator of a fraction cannot be zero so yes, B would be correct for 1 :)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

it would be the same idea for 2 but you would have to factor the denominator first like solve for a^2 + 5a - 36 = 0 then the values you get for a would be the restrictions (or what a does not equal)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry about calling you a boy I never really looked at your picture and this whole time I thought your icon was a character from Naruto because I've only seen it when it was really tiny haha.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be D?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

lol it's fine :P I just had to point it out because it was like the fifth time that happened ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk im confused on that second one

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

close but not quite :) a^2 + 5a - 36 = 0 factors to (a + 9)(a - 4) = 0

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

so a = -9 and 4 right so it would be B do you see it now, or would you like for me to explain it further?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe B then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah I see now. So you would just switch the signs right?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

so for 3 you would simplify \[\frac{ 9b ^{2}-b+4-(2b ^{2}+b-8) }{ 3b - 2 }\] then simplify...and don't forget to distribute the negative :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Option D?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

not quite... try 9b^2 - b + 4 - 2b^2 - b + 8 =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops woah D was way off I wasn't looking at it right. I think it's C.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

D was closer than you think :P you just hadn't distributed the negative :) try again: 9b^2 - b + 4 - 2b^2 - b + 8 =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean B not C.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

okay, then you were right :) good job!

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

now for 4, first get the denominators to be the same then add... so in the numerator: f - 6 + 11f(2f+3) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it'd either be D or B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because they both have 24.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

hmm... neither D nor B .... f - 6 + 11f(2f+3) = f - 6 + 22f^2 + 33f =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then it's either A or C. Sorry I'm in a rush I might have to come back later because I still have 4 more questions.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

C would be correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thans ill be back later, hopefully you're going to still be available by then

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

flip the part after the division, then cancel out a (x - 2) and a (6x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its either A or D because they both have x^2

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

but the (5x^2 + 1) cannot cancel out the (5x^2 - 1) so D would be correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah that's true

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

then for 6, the (x - 2), (x + 1), and (4) can cancel out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C or D?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

D would be correct :)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

crap I hate these >,< lol for 7 multiply top and bottom by 18 so (9 + 1) / (3 - 2) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be 10 / 1 but 1 isn't really needed so it would be 10 which is D I'm guessing

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

D would be correct :D

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

for 8, multiply top and bottom by 3c so (8(3c) - 7(3)) / (4(3c) + 2) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be A

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yep :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay! Thank you for another day of your help! :D You're basically my tutor haha

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

You're welcome ;) It's really nice working with you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You too :) Have a good rest of your day/night
