Solve for x: |x + 2| + 16 = 14 x = −32 and x = −4 x = −4 and x = 0 x = 0 and x = 28 No solution

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Subtract 16 from both sides first :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so then the equation would look like [x+2]=-2

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

yep

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

So you know the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does x=0 or does x=-4?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

nope

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

answer me a question: what is the absolute value of something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the absolute value of something is the amount of digits it is away from zero right? .... and i was talking about the first equation when i asked that question lol

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

well in other words, taking the absolute value of something would be making it positive :)

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

so can an absolute value be -2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope because it is negative

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

exactly :D

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6zDpUL5RkU would help you in answering questions of the same kind :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer to this problem would be c right

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

nope it's d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thnx p.s. the video is really helpful

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):
