The Rise of Zeus Zeus was the greatest god of Greek mythology, but he had to earn his way to power. Early in Greek mythological times, there lived the Titans, who were the rulers of the land, and their offspring, the gods. The god Zeus was born to the great Titans Cronus and Rhea during the age of the Titans. Rhea hid Zeus away from Cronus because Cronus heard a prediction that someone of his own flesh and blood would destroy him and take all of his power. After Zeus grew older, he returned to Cronus and Rhea and waged war with his father. Zeus's brothers and sisters—Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon—were his allies, while Cronus had help from the other Titans and the powerful Cyclops. The battle between the Titans, led by Cronus, and the gods, led by Zeus, lasted for what seemed like an eternity. Zeus fought from Mount Olympus, and Cronus battled from Mount Othrys. The two sides used tidal waves, earthquakes, and powerful weapons to battle each other, but it was not until Zeus used all his might to shake the sky and the seas that the gods defeated the Titans. Mount Othrys broke open, and all of the Titans and Cyclops fell inside. Zeus then sealed up Mount Othrys, and the Titans remained imprisoned inside of the mountain for all time.
